Who is responsible for PLUS loan repayment?

PLUS loan repayment is always the responsibility of the parent. The program is designed to help parents cover the cost of education for their children; it is not designed as a self-payment plan for a student. The loans can never be transferred into the student's name. If a student would like to pay for college without parental assistance, there are other programs available to make this work. The Stafford and Perkins loan program assist students in paying the costs of college themselves. In this case, the student is held solely responsible, and the loan cannot be transferred to the parent.
