Which Loans Qualify for the Military College Loan Repayment Program (CLRP)?

The College Loan Repayment Program or CLRP is an education enlistment incentive granted to qualified individuals serving the US Military. Depending on the type of the military service an applicant is affiliated with, he or she can avail up to $65,000 of the fund to repay any of his or her eligible student loan.

Qualifying Loans

The following student loans availed by an eligible Armed Forces member are covered by the CLRP:

  • Stafford Loans or Guaranteed Loans
  • Perkins Loans or National Direct Student Loans
  • Auxiliary Loan Assistance for Students
  • Supplemental Loans for Students
  • Federally Insured Student Loans
  • PLUS or Parents Loans for Undergraduate
  • Consolidated Loans (exclusively covers the Army member's educational expenses)

Non-Qualifying Loans

An enlisted service member cannot use the CLRP to repay the following loans that he or she might have acquired:

  • State Funded Loans
  • Private Loans
  • Institution Loans
  • Equity Loans
  • Consolidated Loans made for member's relatives like cousin, siblings, wife, and the like

Furthermore, any member with a loan or loans in default is not eligible to repay the loan or loans using the CLRP.

Member's Eligibility

Military officers are not eligible to apply for the CLRP. Only the non-prior service enlisted members can avail this special incentive. However, the applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements before he or she can enjoy the privilege.

For the Army, the member must:

  • not or is not enrolled in the Montgomery GI Bill
  • enlist in the Army with a diploma
  • accomplish a score of 50 or higher in the Armed Forces Qualification Test
  • have no prior military experience
  • have a loan insured or guaranteed by the federal government
  • enlist in one of the critical military occupational specialties


For the Navy, the member must:

  • not have prior military service experience
  • must qualify for Navy Nuclear Field critical rating
  • obtain at least a score of 50 or higher in the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test
  • enlist in one of the CLRP qualifying ratings
  • have a loan guaranteed under the Higher Education Act of 1965

For the Air Force, the member must:

  • have no prior military experience
  • have been in the enlistment for at least 4 years
  • have an enlistment contract where the CLRP is indicated
  • have no Montgomery GI Bill contract
