Student Loans: Special Circumstances

When you are relying on student loans for your college education, sometimes there are special circumstances that need to be addressed in order for you to be eligible to receive the financial aid you need. In order to make sure that you get the amount of aid you require to attend your school, be prepared to justify the special circumstance that applies to you. Make sure to have any necessary documents on hand to support your position when you meet with your school’s financial aid department.

Types of Special Circumstances

Below are some special circumstances that may apply to you:

  • loss of income due to employment
  • child care expenses
  • private school tuition for a dependent
  • illness or death
  • divorce
  • loss of Social Security income

Contact the financial aid office at your school and arrange a time to discuss any of the above circumstances with one of their specialists. If you did not qualify for all the financial aid you require to attend your school, if you show them proof of how your situation has changed, they may be able to make an adjustment that gets you the money you need.
