Required Documents for Federal Student Loans

Most students will borrow federal student loans to finance their college education. The application process can be a little time consuming, but by having all of the required documents, you can be sure your application is accurate and you receive the funding you need. Some of the documents are needed in order to fill out the application, and other documents are needed if your school randomly audits you and requests copies of tax returns and W-2s. The following list will help you gather the necessary information in order to be prepared during the application process.

  • Social Security card/Social Security number
  • Driver's license
  • Bank statements and other investment information
  • W-2 forms for you and your parents or spouse
  • Tax returns
  • Tax returns of your parents if you are a dependent student and your spouse if you are married
  • Your alien resident registration card if applicable

All of these documents support your application. Your application will ask for information about assets and income in order to determine how much aid you are eligible for. Be sure to keep these documents until your application is complete and the funds have been dispersed.
