Renewing Your Federal Student Loan

Individuals who have been granted federal student loans are required by the Department of Education to renew their federal student aid applications every school year. If you are a student awarded government student aid and will be attending another academic year, you should therefore reapply for student loans.

Renewal Processing

To renew a federal student loan for the next school year, you must fill out and submit a new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form online, using your existing account in the FAFSA website.

Follow these simple steps when renewing your federal student loan:

  1. Go to the FAFSA website and click the "Fill Out Your FAFSA" link.

  2. Select the specific academic year for which you wish to apply on the drop-down menu and click "Next."

  3. Provide all the required personal data in the login page. Use the virtual keyboard found on the right side of the blank form to enter your Social Security number (SSN) and date of birth. Utilizing this application increases the security of your information's privacy. Do not add dashes in your SSN or slashes in your date of birth.

  4. Provide a password, re-enter the same password and then hit "Next."

  5. Edit certain information that you need to change in the pre-filled-in form of your existing account. The most important data that you should provide is your or your spouse's most recent tax information, adjusted gross income and other required financial information. Dependent students must refer to the tax and income reports of their parents.

  6. Review the filled-out form before submitting to prevent problems in the future.
