Military Student Loans: 4 Repayment Programs to Try

Military student loans are part of the perks being offered by the US military to help it recruit the finest men and women who will serve the country’s armed forces. These loans are designed to help individuals who are eager to join the services pay for their college education. The college repayment loans being offered by the military have been authorized by the US congress. But each service branch has its own unique set of qualifications and benefits outlined in its student loan program. For instance, not all branches of the US military offer the same amounts of student loan repayment.

Typically, the military will only pay for a portion and not the total amount of the qualified individual’s student loans. And more often than not, the loan repayment programs are for the benefit of new enlisted personnel and not the officers. Here are the major military student loans that you can apply for when you enlist.

1 - Army Student Loan Repayment Program

The US Army offers its own student loan repayment program as a special incentive for new recruits who are considered as highly qualified for the service. This type of loan repayment program can repay student loans of up to $65,000 per active serviceman or woman who qualifies. It must be noted that even reservists are also included in the Army’s loan repayment program, however, they can only enjoy up to $20,000 in total student loan repayment.

2 - Navy Student Loan Repayment Program

Just like the US Army, the Navy also grants student loans for highly qualified individuals who enlist for active service. The maximum amount that can be enjoyed under this program is $65,000.  Meanwhile, qualified Navy reservists can only get up to $10,000 in student loan repayment.

3 - Marine Corps Tuition Assistance

The Marine Corps, which is traditionally a sister service of the US Navy under the Department of the Navy, has its own educational assistance program for its members. The program is designed to help out marines who voluntarily want to pursue higher education during off-duty hours. Unlike other student loan repayment programs which are offered only during first-time enlistment, the Marine Corps Tuition Assistance can be enjoyed by members who are already actively serving the corps. Under this program, the Marine Corps will pay 100% tuition and other fees, provided that such fees do not exceed $250 per semester credit hour or a total of $4,500 per year.

4 - Air Force College Loan Program

The student loan repayment program offered by the Air Force is intended for individuals who have non-prior service experience. New college graduates who have taken out student loans during their stay in school can enlist in the Air Force and enjoy a maximum of $10,000 in loan repayment per applicant.

Other Concerns - Qualifying Loans Covered by Military Programs

If you plan to enlist in any branch of the US armed forces and apply for service-specific college repayment programs being offered, you should know that not all types of college loans are covered by military student loans. There are specific loans that can be repaid using programs under the US armed forces and the most popular ones include:

  • Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students or PLUS
  • Federally Insured Student Loans or FISL
  • Stafford Student Loan
  • Auxiliary Loan Assistance for Students or ALAS
