Is it possible to remove my name from a student loan if I am a cosigner?

If you are a student loan cosigner, you must speak with the primary borrower and lender on the loan before removing your name. The loan must be refinanced to a new cosigner or other terms. This cannot happen without approval from all parties involved. For example, if you would like to remove your name from a spouse's loan because you are entering divorce, you must have that spouse's agreement. The contract you signed is legally binding. Therefore, be prepared to go through an official legal process if you wish to have your name removed from a loan, and be aware that your credit may drop temporarily.
