Is it possible to get a student loan when your spouse has a student loan in default?

It is entirely possible to get a student loan if your spouse has a student loan in default. You have a separate credit history from your spouse, and you have a completely different credit report as a result. The key is to keep your credit separate if you want to avoid the consequences of your spouse's default. Do not put your name on your spouse's loan, and do not put your spouse's information on your student loan application. The lender will consider only your income, credit and debt profile when issuing you a loan if you do not apply jointly.
