Is it possible to discharge student loans?

Most student loans will not be discharged in bankruptcy. Student loans are high priority debts, and a judge is likely to attempt to work out a payment plan through bankruptcy rather than dismiss the debts. There are a few methods to have the debts discharged, however. First, if the debts are subordinate to other loans, they may be discharged because they no longer have a priority status. Second, if you can prove substantial hardship, a judge may discharge the debts. In order to do this, you will need to show that repaying the debts would render you unable to meet day-to-day fixed living expenses in your life.
