How do you become recognized as an independent student on your FAFSA application?

When you are filling out your FAFSA application, you may have the desire to be recognized as an independent student. As an independent student, you may be able to qualify for more financial aid than if you were your parents' dependent. In order to qualify as an independent student, you have to meet one of seven criteria. You can qualify if you are 24 years old, if you are orphaned, or if you are a veteran of the Armed Forces. You can also qualify if you are a grad student, are married or have kids, or if an administrator says that you are independent.
