Filing a Federal Student Loan Application

A federal student loan application is an important tool to insure that you can obtain proper funding to further your education.

What You Will Need

One of the first things you will need before you file your federal student loan application is a Federal Aid Student PIN number. Besides your exclusive PIN number, you will also need a FAFSA application (obtained online).

Step 1 - Create Your PIN Number

If you do not have a Federal Aid Student PIN number you will need to obtain one. Go online to www.pin.ed.gov. The three steps are:

  • Enter all the specific personal information to create your PIN number.
  • Submit your completed PIN application electronically.
  • Wait to receive your PIN.

Step 2 - Fill out a Federal Student Loan Application

Once you have established your Federal Aid Student PIN number, the next step is to fill out a federal student loan application. Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov and follow the following steps:

  • Figure out what your dependency status is and check your application deadlines.
  • Figure out what your school code is from the list of institutions.
  • Work through the web application, double-checking to see if everything is filled out correctly.
