Housing Grants for Women Explained

Many people do not realize that the federal government offers housing grants for women. Using a grant can be a great way to help you get the money that you need. The great thing about grants is that they do not have to be paid back. If you can secure housing as a result of a grant, you really have no reason not to. Here are the basics of housing grants for women and how they work.

Qualifications

When you hear that there are housing grants available for women, you may think that you only have to be a woman to get them. While being a woman is one of the qualifications, it is usually only one of many. You do not just have to be a woman to get a grant. If that were the case, the grant money would be used up quickly as there are many women in the United States that would apply. You also have to fit the criteria of the specific grant that you are applying for. Most of the time, you have to have a non-profit organization that helps other women in addition to being a woman yourself. They want to make sure that the money they give is going to be beneficial to a number of women instead of just helping one.

You will most likely have to have a successful track record with your organization for three to five years in order to qualify. This drastically limits the number of people that can apply for this type of program. However, if you qualify for it, there is no better source of funds in the world.

Application Process

Once you have thoroughly read the criteria for the grant and decided that you qualify, you will have to apply for the grant. The grant application process is usually a very tedious one and requires a lot of patience. You will usually have to write a grant proposal that includes a long essay. It is not typically as simple as filling out a form. You might have to get some help in writing the grant proposal from someone that has done it before if you want to successfully land the money.

Once you submit the grant proposal, you start playing the waiting game. Waiting on grants can be a very long process. Be sure to note all submission dates because grant dates are very specific. This gives everyone a fair chance to get their proposals in. From that date, the government might take a long time to decide who the grant will be awarded to. They will read through all of the applicants and then notify everyone who won.

If you win, you will receive the money according to the grant rules. It may be distributed all at once or in sections as you prove the need for it.
