Can a bank force me to get title insurance?

A lender will likely require you to get title insurance for a piece of property before it issues a loan. This protects you, but it more importantly protects the bank if there is a problem with your title. In this case, you may lose the value of the home, and you may not be able to repay the bank for the loan taken to purchase the home. If this were to happen, insurance would kick in to refund you, and you in return could refund the bank. Thankfully, title insurance is relatively inexpensive, so it should not add much to your monthly mortgage payment.
