What is the Military College Loan Repayment Program (CLRP)?
The Military College Loan Repayment Program, or CLRP, is an enlistment incentive authorized by the federal government for new enlistees. The program agrees to pay a portion of eligible student loan debt accrued before service, if the person enlists and serves his or her term.
The CLRP is designed to help each branch meet their recruitment goals. Not all branches of the military will offer this program, because they can choose whether or not they want to offer it.
Congress has established a maximum of $65,000 in loan debt. However, each military branch will have their requirements and limits. The following loans qualify for the program:
- PLUS Loans
- Perkins Loans
- Stafford Loans
- Supplemental Loans for Students (SLS).
Also, the military member cannot have prior military service. Active duty is typically also a requirement. The Marines are currently testing their program that gives more funds to those who agree to extend their enlistment for 6 months.
