Tips for Personal Loans in Today’s Economy

Nov 9th, 2009 @ 5:42 PM by Debbie Dragon

In today’s struggling economy obtaining a personal loan can be a challenge, but not entirely impossible. More important than ever before you should do your research before filing any loan application. Dotting your I’s and crossing your T’s can greatly increase your chances of obtaining the loan you desire.

Review Your Credit Report Thoroughly

Before applying for your loan you should first review your credit report. If you have less than stellar credit, this will be particularly important. Look closely for any discrepancies. If there are any mistakes get them corrected before seeking your loan. If there are hits on your credit, if at all possible, fix them and wait for your credit score to reflect the changes. Be prepared to show documentation of repayment on any credit discrepancies you have not been able to fix on your report.

Know the Exact Amount you Need and Don’t Ask for More

Especially in today’s economic times lenders are leery to lend money to even those with great credit history. Take the time to carefully figure out the exact loan amount you will need and be prepared to back up why you need that amount.

Have Proof to Show You Can Pay Back the Money

Be ready to show proof that you indeed can pay back the loan you are seeking and never ask for a loan that you know you will not be able to pay back. Lenders are not easily fooled. Expect to show proof of stable employment and your earnings. If you are self employed you will most likely be asked to show your earning potentials through earning reports and business plans.

Research Where You Plan to Apply for Your Loan

Know that it may take more than one application to get a loan approval. Be aware of this and carefully research the bank or loan companies you plan on applying to. Limit your applications to a select few companies. Applying to too many lenders can decrease your credibility and as a result your credit score can be affected.

Keep in mind that in today’s world, even following the above tips does not guarantee that you will be able to obtain a personal loan. If you get turned down you may need to reevaluate whether or not you need the loan or what other options may be available to you.
